Former chief creative officer of Pixar, whose principles of storytelling have shaped modern animation.

Ventana Sur, a prominent film market, is bringing a diverse collection of five debut feature films from Latin America and Spain to the Cannes Film Festival. These films, all in their post-production phase, cover various genres including comedy, supernatural thriller, animated action-adventure, gender documentary, and poetic realism, showcasing the vibrant and varied storytelling emerging from the region. This initiative, a collaboration between the Cannes Marché du Film and Uruguay's ACAU agency, aims to introduce these promising projects to a global audience and facilitate their journey to international festivals.

Ventana Sur Shines a Spotlight on Emerging Latin American and Spanish Cinema at Cannes

On April 14, 2026, the prestigious Cannes Film Festival will host a special showcase titled "Ventana Sur Goes to Cannes – Río de la Plata." This exclusive event, a joint effort by the Cannes Marché du Film and Uruguay’s ACAU agency, will unveil five compelling first features from Latin American and Spanish filmmakers. Among the highly anticipated titles are Uruguay's feel-good dramedy "When I Existed," Spain's atmospheric supernatural thriller "The Mantises," and the ambitious Brazil-Mexico animated epic "The Mark of the Jaguar: The Awakening of Fire." Two other notable films, "The Grass," a poignant realist drama about working-class motherhood from Argentina, and "The Way You See Me," a thought-provoking documentary on gender identity, will also be featured. These projects, all currently in their final stages of production, represent the richness and diversity of contemporary Latin American cinema, building upon their earlier recognition at Ventana Sur's project showcases. The "Goes to Cannes" series, which offers new awards like the OCS+ Award and the AH Media Production Award, continues to provide crucial support and visibility for emerging talent in the film industry.

This initiative by Ventana Sur highlights the growing global appeal and artistic depth of Latin American and Spanish cinema. By providing a platform at a world-renowned festival like Cannes, it not only fosters international collaborations but also inspires filmmakers to explore diverse themes and narrative styles. The inclusion of films spanning different genres and addressing significant social issues underscores the region's commitment to bold and authentic storytelling, enriching the global cinematic landscape. It's a powerful reminder that compelling stories can emerge from any corner of the world, offering fresh perspectives and unique cultural insights.
